Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S.-born cleric linked to al-Qaeda’s Yemen-based wing, was killed in a joint CIA/Military Operation according to Administration officials, removing a “global terrorist” high on a U.S. wanted list. al-Awlaki was killed by drone strike while traveling in a convoy in Yemen. The Justice Department wrote a secret memorandum authorizing the lethal targeting of al Awlaki, according to Administration officials. While the President has the authority, the question remains whether this unchecked authority on behalf of the American people is justified. While most military pundits and politicians on both sides of the isle hailed the killing of a dangerous terrorist, Ron Paul, Jon Huntsman and the ACLU regard the killing of an American citizen against international law and the constitution of the United States. For an Administration that was vocal against Guantanemo, wire tapping and wanted due process for Guantanemo detainees, the DOJ memorandum seems to be hypocritical.
Although Ron Paul accepted the raid and killing of Bin Ladin in Pakistan, he took objection to this killing. Paul’s objection was based on the fact that al-Awlaki was a U.S. citizen
