A gunman in a car killed a former high-ranking Taliban official working on reconciling Afghanistan's insurgency with the government, a fresh blow to peace efforts even as Kabul announced it was gradually taking the lead from the U.S.-led coalition for providing security in much of the country.A gunman with a silenced pistol killed Arsala Rahmani as he was sitting in his car at an intersection in one of the capital's most secure areas near Kabul University, police said.The death of Rahmani, a top member of the Afghan peace council and a senator in parliament's upper house, dealt another setback to efforts to negotiate a political resolution to the decade-long war. Obama Goes ‘Forward’ on gay marriage
President Obama has scheduled an interview about his views on gay marriage for Wednesday afternoon, capping days of growing pressure to clarify his “evolving” position after Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. spoke out in support of such unions. Mr. Obama is expected to sit down with ABC News‘ Robin Roberts at the White House for an interview that wasn’t listed on his schedule earlier in the day. The interview comes a day after North Carolina voters approved a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union only between a man and a woman, the 32nd state to approve such a measure. DIXVILLE NOTCH, N.H. - From the pastel wicker chairs lined up in the sunroom to the stacks of bright red ski lift seats outside, the list of items for auction at the Balsams Grand Resort Hotel is as sweeping as the view surrounding the historic property in far northern New Hampshire.Saturday's auction is another step toward restoring the nearly 150-year-old hotel, which was sold for $2.3 million in December to two local businessmen who hope to renovate it and re-open it next year.
