Financial markets are vulnerable to rumors about North Korea

Financial markets are vulnerable to rumors about North Korea

Shortly after 2pm on Friday South Korean stocks briefly fell steeply and the won slipped against the dollar amid rumors of an explosion at the Yongbyon nuclear facility in North Korea. “Everyone panicked and it’s still very confusing,” a local bank trader said at the time. South Korea’s Defense Ministry said it had no knowledge of any explosion. The U.S. Geological Survey website showed no unusual seismic activity in the area and Seoul’s Institute of Nuclear Safety showed radioactivity readings across South Korea were normal. There were no announcements from North Korea’s various media outlets. One explanation is that whoever started the rumor was looking to make money from a bet in the financial market, such as a derivatives position that would generate profits from a [...]

EU Court Rules US Airlines Must Pay for Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Airlines flying in and out of the European Union -- including U.S.-based airlines -- will have to pay for the greenhouse gas emissions from those flights, according to a ruling (PDF) today from the E.U.'s highest court. The European Court of Justice ruled against several U.S. and Canadian airlines and trade associations, including United, Continental and American airlines, and their trade group, Airlines for America, all of which argued that their inclusion in the E.U. Emissions Trading System violated international law and the Open Skies agreement between the E.U. and U.S. These airlines and trade associations weren't the only opponents of the E.U. Aviation Directive, the only global mandate covering aviation emissions. The governments of China, India, Australia, Russia, Korea and [...]

South Korea Stocks tumbling On News of North Korean Leader’s Death

SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)--Asian stock markets dropped Monday, with South Korea's stock market and the won tumbling to multiweek lows on news of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il's death. With markets already reeling from the European debt crisis and global growth concerns, Kim's death has added a dangerous layer of instability to the Korean peninsula with many Asian neighbours uneasy about the leadership transition phase in one of the world's most reclusive regimes. South Korea's Kospi Composite briefly fell 4.4% to its lowest level since mid-October, though it was last off 3.2%, while the won tumbled to over two month lows. The dollar was recently fetching KRW1,1175.4, after earlier tapping KRW1,199. "What I can say now is that the shock on the market will be inevitable in the short [...]

Doc Compton’s “Need It, Keep It” Chain Letter Makes Giving a Viral Sensation

Doc Compton’s “Need It, Keep It” Chain Letter Makes Giving a Viral Sensation

May I suggest something quite odd.  Ever been broke?  Know someone who is a bit broker than your?  Give them a dollar in an envelope.  read on.   If you do this.. please return with your experience. You know those scammy chain letters, insisting that if you send $1 to one person on the list, you’ll receive $50 from other people in the chain? Doc Compton’s mission is pretty much the exact opposite of that: he’s been passing out letters to strangers with a single dollar bill enclosed, asking them to pay it forward. “If you need it, keep it,” the letter says. Otherwise, simply pass it on to someone else who could use the money—and, if you’re able to, add a dollar of your own to the envelope. The “Need it, Keep It” chain letter is the McKinney, Texas [...]
