California Congressional candidate vows hunger strike until opponent agrees to debate

One of the frustrations of political challengers is getting the incumbent to debate. Ray Lutz, a Democratic candidate in the 52nd Congressional District in eastern San Diego County, has a novel approach: a hunger strike until one-term Republican incumbent Duncan D. Hunter agrees to debate. “Until Hunter steps up to the plate, I’ll be stepping away from the dinner plate,” Lutz said. The hunger strike is set to officially begin at sundown Thursday. Lutz has encouraged supporters to sit in an “isolation booth” outside his campaign office along Promenade Park in El Cajon and maybe engage in a one-day fast of their own to further goad the incumbent. Lutz is known for persistence. He was a leader in the movement to block the Blackwater security firm from opening a [...]

57% of Likely Voters Describe Democratic Congressional Agenda As Extreme | Politisite

Most U.S. voters believe the Democratic congressional agenda is extreme, while a plurality describe the Republican agenda as mainstream. Congress Approval Rating 11% lowest since the 70s

PRINCETON, NJ — Gallup’s 2010 Confidence in Institutions poll finds Congress ranking dead last out of the 16 institutions rated this year. Eleven percent of Americans say they have “a great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in Congress, down from 17% in 2009 and a percentage point lower than the previous low for Congress, recorded in 2008. The Gallup poll was conducted July 8-11, shortly before Congress passed a major financial regulatory reform bill, which President Obama signed into law this week. Underscoring Congress’ image problem, half of Americans now say they have “very little” or “no” confidence in Congress, up from 38% in 2009 — and the highest for any institution since Gallup first asked this question in 1973. Previous near-50% [...]
