Huntsman won’t sign cut, cap, balance” pledge loses DeMint’s stamp of approval

Washington (CNN) - Republican Sen. Jim DeMint isn't sold on who to support in the 2012 presidential election, but Jon Huntsman will not make his list. The South Carolina king maker and early supporter of the tea party movement has called on Republican presidential candidates to sign a "cut, cap, balance" pledge to slash spending and balance the budget. He has said a commitment to the pledge is necessary to win his support that could prove valuable in the early voting state of South Carolina and within his larger conservative following. Huntsman, a former Utah governor who served as President Obama's U.S. ambassador to China, lost DeMint's support when he refused to sign the pledge one day after he announced his bid for the White House. "For me, he's out," DeMint said [...]
Senator DeMint: More Spending Is a Threat to America

Reaching the debt ceiling should be a warning bell to Congress that our debt has reached scorching levels. But all Washington politicians want to do is shut off the alarm instead of put out the fire. The alarms are ringing loudly, and with more frequency, in response to new and expanded entitlement programs, bailouts and Big Government takeovers. Congress has voted to raise the debt ceiling every year since 2002 — and twice in 2008 and 2009. Raising the debt ceiling yet again without a plan to cut spending would be like putting out a fire with gasoline instead of water. Doing so would allow the government to continue borrowing more to spend more. It’s time to extinguish this idea. The only way to finally stop increasing the debt is to stop borrowing and [...]
DeMint endorses Rossi for WA Senate

Republican Sen. Jim DeMint announced his endorsement of Washington Senate candidate Dino Rossi on Thursday. The move is the latest in a series of endorsements made by the South Carolina senator, many of which have pitted him against either the GOP establishment or former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. "Dino Rossi is a principled conservative who will help us take our country back. He will fight to stop the massive spending, bailouts, and debt that are bankrupting our country," DeMint said in a statement. "Dino understands the stimulus bill was a failure, he will fight to repeal the health care takeover, and he will help us pass a constitutional amendment to balance the budget. Rossi and two other Republicans, Clint Didier and Paul Akers are in the battle to challenge incumbent Democratic [...]
Senator DeMint in South Carolina Promoting Health Care Freedom

Today, U.S. Senator Jim DeMint announced details for his 5th Annual “South Carolina on the Move” Tour. Senator DeMint will visit 12 cities throughout the state to promote his plan for health care freedom that will make it possible for Americans to have access to personal health insurance and the freedom to make their own health care decisions. “There are serious problems with the President’s plan for a government takeover of health care and I look forward to hearing from South Carolinians on this issue. I will continue to fight for real health care reform by fixing what’s broken, not ending what’s working. We should allow patients to buy affordable insurance from any state, give fair tax treatment to those who don’t get insurance at work, and lower costs by reducing [...]
Video: SC Senator DeMint opposes GIVE Act
Jim DeMint called the GIVE Act “a huge, well-intentioned mistake” on the floor of the Senate yesterday. In a speech lasting almost 15 minutes, the conservative firebrand spoke judiciously about the motives of the bill’s backers, but points out that charity and volunteerism belong in the heart, and not as a federal program subsidized by massive infusions of taxpayer money. After all, the revenue GIVE uses won’t exactly be voluntarily given: I’ve included the full text of DeMint’s speech below, for those who’d rather read it than watch the video. I think the best part comes near the end, when DeMint offers this observation: These are not Government decisions. We need to focus on what we were set up to do and do it much better than we are doing, instead of every week [...]
