First Republican Governor of Texas Bill Clements dies at 94

Bill Clements , a successful Dallas businessman who shattered the image of Texas as a one-party state by becoming its first Republican governor in more than a century, has died at the age of 94. Not content to be the millionaire founder of a worldwide oil-drilling company, Mr. Clements sought to transfer his success in the business world into a successful career in politics. In his first try for office, in 1978, he won the governorship of the nation’s third-largest state. Although he lost his bid for re-election four years later, he staged a stunning comeback in 1986, beating incumbent Gov. Mark White in one of the closest gubernatorial races in state history. Gov. Rick Perry hailed Clements as “the father of the modern-day Texas Republican Party.” “Our state [...]

What? Billy the Kid Pardoned? Gov. may make it his last act

What? Billy the Kid Pardoned? Gov. may make it his last act

Billy the Kid to get a pardon? Excuse me? Friday is set to be D-Day in the strangest -- and arguably last -- case of the year we're all reasonably calling 2010. The governor of New Mexico, Bill Richardson, has until December 31 to decide whether to pardon the outlaw in the case of a killing of a sheriff, which dates back to 1881. The reason for the late December date is that Richardson's term will then be up. (See Billy the Kid in TIME's top 10 bandits.) There have been around 400 responses on a website dedicated to the oft-asked question (the split is roughly 220-180 in favor of granting the pardon) but Richardson, a known Billy the Kid buff, is doing this in response to an old promise by another governor. It's believed that territorial Gov. Lew Wallace made a vow to the [...]

S.C. Governor Elect Haley names budget task force

With federal stimulus dollars running out and a $700 million state budget shortfall projection, Gov.-elect Nikki Haley named a five-person task force Monday – several of whom are Gov. Mark Sanford allies – to help her identify the state’s most pressing fiscal challenges. “We are about to enter a budget year as tough as any we’ve ever faced,” Haley said of the tight budget which could result in more state workers laid off and more state services cut. One state agency, the Department of Health and Human Services announced last week it will end payments to doctors, hospitals and other health care providers in March if not allowed to run a deficit. “State government is going to be hit hard this coming year,” Haley said. “But within these serious challenges [...]
