SC Senate Passes Voter ID, Goes to Governor for Signature

Columbia, SC - May 11, 2011 - South Carolina Senate Republicans today sent the Voter ID bill to Governor Haley for her signature, stopping years of roadblocks by Democrats and finally securing South Carolina's election process. By a vote of 26 to 16, the Senate passed the Voter ID conference report just an hour after giving second reading to the state budget.  Immediately after passing Voter ID, the Senate passed a bill by Senator Ryberg giving $100 Million in unemployment tax relief to South Carolina businesses. “We put our heads down, worked hard, and came through for the people of South Carolina,” Sen. Chip Campsen, lead sponsor of the Senate companion bill, said. “Voter ID will help secure our state’s elections and remove doubt about the legitimacy of the final [...]

Lindsey Graham (R-SC) revealed that the top contender to host AFRICOM is... Charleston, South Carolina! "Secretary Gates, I've been told, has instructed the Department of Defense to look for a stateside home for Africa Command, to move you out of Stuttgart and that the leading contender, the most preferred site was Charleston Air Force Base," Graham said at today's Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on AFRICOM. AFRICOM Commander Gen. Carter Ham said he wasn't aware that Gates had chosen Charleston as the lead contender, but said he liked Charleston all the same. "Sir, I have visited [...]

SC Remains “First in The South” Presidential Primary

SC Remains “First in The South” Presidential Primary

The Republican National Committee has approved a 2012 presidential primary calendar that preserves South Carolina's "first in line" position. The plan allows only Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada to hold their contests in February. South Carolina will retain its position as being first in the south to vote in the presidential primary. During the RNC meeting in Kansas City, Chairman Karen Floyd and the South Carolina delegation worked with the delegations of other early states to ensure no changes were made to adversely impact South Carolina's role in the presidential nomination process. "We remain committed to doing whatever is necessary to preserve our unique place in that process. We have a remarkable track record in putting forward a nominee to carry the [...]
