Congress reaches agreement to avoid shutdown

Congressional negotiators have reached an agreement that could prevent a government shutdown, Democratic sources say. A temporary resolution passed earlier this year to keep the government funded expires at midnight Friday. Lawmakers have approved seven stop-gap spending measures this calendar year. Negotiators were signing off on a massive spending bill that funds the government through 2012, they told CNN Thursday night. Both the House and Senate must vote on it. The deal comes after heated talks between congressional leaders and the White House on Thursday. They were discussing ways to resolve their differences over measures to keep the government funded after Friday and to extend the payroll tax cut, which is set to expire at the end of the year. Congress to eliminate the three Percent Tax Business pay to contract with government

“A swarm of major new regulations coming out of Washington are threatening Baker Ready-Mix’s ability to stay in business and keep rebuilding New Orleans. Together, these sweeping rules will make it much more difficult for me to sell concrete, to give health coverage to my employees, and to grow jobs.” That was the message shared by small business CEO and Black Chamber of Commerce Chairman Arnold Baker at a House Judiciary Committee hearing held yesterday on the Regulatory Accountability Act (H.R. 3010), bipartisan legislation that would reform the federal regulatory process and reduce unnecessary burdens on job creators. According to Mr. Baker, the cumulative impact of just four proposed Obama Administration regulations will add “as much as $20 to $36 to the cost of every ton [...]
Continuing Resolution passes House 219 to 203, Speaker Boehner says CR Deserves Quick Passage in the Senate

WASHINGTON, DC (Sep 23) House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) released the following statement after the House passed a short-term Continuing Resolution (CR) that, for the second year in a row, cuts spending relative to the previous year and keeps the government operating until November 18: “I urge the Senate to quickly pass this bill so we can send it to the president and keep our focus on the American people’s top priority: jobs. This common-sense measure cuts spending for the second year in a row and protects our struggling economy from the uncertainty of a government shutdown. It provides immediate assistance to Americans impacted by natural disasters in a way that’s best for families and taxpayers. And it lets lawmakers continue the important work of removing government [...]

Columbia, SC - May 11, 2011 - South Carolina Senate Republicans today sent the Voter ID bill to Governor Haley for her signature, stopping years of roadblocks by Democrats and finally securing South Carolina's election process. By a vote of 26 to 16, the Senate passed the Voter ID conference report just an hour after giving second reading to the state budget. Immediately after passing Voter ID, the Senate passed a bill by Senator Ryberg giving $100 Million in unemployment tax relief to South Carolina businesses. “We put our heads down, worked hard, and came through for the people of South Carolina,” Sen. Chip Campsen, lead sponsor of the Senate companion bill, said. “Voter ID will help secure our state’s elections and remove doubt about the legitimacy of the final [...]
Senate passes revised 9/11 health benefits bill

The Senate on Wednesday passed a compromise version of a bill to provide free medical treatment to first responders of the September 11 terrorist attack. The bill passed on a voice vote on what is expected to be the final day of the lame-duck session of Congress. It now goes to the House, which also is expected to approve it and send it to President Barack Obama to be signed into law. Negotiations Wednesday morning involving Republican Sens. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Mike Enzi of Wyoming and Democratic Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, both of New York, led to the deal that reduced the cost of the bill by $2 billion and made other changes sought by GOP opponents, according to statements by the participants. "The Christmas Miracle we've been looking for has [...]
