Senator Lindsey Graham Responds to Verdict in the Ahmed Ghailani Trial

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) today made this statement on the trial of Ahmed Ghailani. "While I respect the judgment of the court, I'm deeply disappointed in the verdict. "We are at war with Al Qaeda.  Members of the organization, and their associates, should be treated as warriors, not common criminals.  We put our nation at risk by criminalizing the war. "Going forward, I once again strongly encourage the Obama Administration to use military commissions to prosecute enemy combatants, particularly the 9/11 conspirators like Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba."

Ted Stevens, Former Alaska Senator dies in Plane Crash with 5 others

Former United States Senator Ted Stevens was killed in a plane crash in southwestern Alaska on Monday night, a former member of Mr. Stevens’s Congressional staff said on Tuesday. There were nine people on board, and five were believed to have been killed in the crash, authorities said. Mr. Stevens, who had been the longest serving Republican in the United States Senate, was 86. The body of Mr. Stevens was found just after daylight, according to the aide who spoke on the condition of anonymity out of respect to the family. Three survivors were airlifted to Anchorage for further medical attention. A rescue crew from the Alaska Air National Guard and the United States Coast Guard arrived on the scene more than 12 hours after the crash, hampered by rain, high winds and [...]

Senator DeMint in South Carolina Promoting Health Care Freedom

Today, U.S. Senator Jim DeMint announced details for his 5th Annual “South Carolina on the Move” Tour. Senator DeMint will visit 12 cities throughout the state to promote his plan for health care freedom that will make it possible for Americans to have access to personal health insurance and the freedom to make their own health care decisions. “There are serious problems with the President’s plan for a government takeover of health care and I look forward to hearing from South Carolinians on this issue. I will continue to fight for real health care reform by fixing what’s broken, not ending what’s working. We should allow patients to buy affordable insurance from any state, give fair tax treatment to those who don’t get insurance at work, and lower costs by reducing [...]

Video: SC Senator DeMint opposes GIVE Act

Jim DeMint called the GIVE Act “a huge, well-intentioned mistake” on the floor of the Senate yesterday. In a speech lasting almost 15 minutes, the conservative firebrand spoke judiciously about the motives of the bill’s backers, but points out that charity and volunteerism belong in the heart, and not as a federal program subsidized by massive infusions of taxpayer money. After all, the revenue GIVE uses won’t exactly be voluntarily given: I’ve included the full text of DeMint’s speech below, for those who’d rather read it than watch the video. I think the best part comes near the end, when DeMint offers this observation: These are not Government decisions. We need to focus on what we were set up to do and do it much better than we are doing, instead of every week [...]
